Veterinary medicine has been taught in Tartu since the founding of Tartu Veterinary School in 1848. From 1873 to 1918 the school operated under the name of Tartu Veterinary Institute. In 1919, the Veterinary Institute was incorporated into Tartu University as Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.
In the same year, the Faculty of Agriculture was founded at Tartu University where higher education in animal science was introduced. In 1930, courses in dairy science were started at the Faculty of Agriculture, and in 1937 meat science curriculum was launched at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. In 1947, the Estonian Research Institute of Animal Breeding and Veterinary Science (ELVI), an institution conducting applied animal research, was established under the auspices of the Estonian Academy of Sciences. In 1951, an independent university - the Estonian Agricultural Academy (EPA) was founded on the basis of the Faculties of Agriculture, Forestry, and Veterinary Medicine of the Tartu University. |
