From the beginning of October to the first day of November, the Hyraco student organization at the Estonian University of Life Sciences organized the inaugural Hyraco Equine Welfare Month. This intensive educational month focused on equine welfare and brought together students, lecturers, and members of the equine community. The event included diverse lectures, a practical workshop, and a fun closing quiz, providing participants with valuable knowledge and hands-on experience.
A Diverse Program Open to All
The month-long program featured five lectures and one practical workshop covering a range of topics, including:
- The life of an equine veterinarian in areas with limited resources,
- Legislation related to equine welfare from a supervisory perspective,
- Holistic hoof care and barefoot trimming,
- Saddle fitting and the consequences of poorly adapted saddles.
The lectures were open not only to students of the Estonian University of Life Sciences but also to anyone interested in equine welfare. Hyraco strongly believes that knowledge should be accessible to all, and therefore, updates and information were shared on social media (Instagram) throughout the month. On average, 40% of Hyraco’s members attended each session, with additional participants from outside the organization, including animal science students and horse enthusiasts.
“For a first edition, we are very happy with the turnout. The participants were curious and motivated, which meant a lot to us,” said Roxane Le Coat, President of Hyraco. She also emphasized the dedication of student organizers who worked hard to ensure the event’s success.
Hands-On Workshop and Closing Quiz
One of the highlights of the month was a practical workshop focusing on holistic hoof care, where participants gained hands-on experience. The month concluded with a quiz covering all the topics discussed during the event. Winners were rewarded with the book Equine Welfare provided by the Universities Federation of Animal Welfare (UFAW) and Loomade heaolu (“Animal Welfare”), published by the Estonian University of Life Sciences and co-authored by 12 experts. All participants also received a certificate of attendance as recognition of their efforts.
Looking Ahead to the Future
The event received overwhelmingly positive feedback from participants and speakers alike.
Hyraco is already planning the second edition of Hyraco Equine Welfare Month for the 2025-2026 academic year. The student organization aims to build on this year’s success by offering even more diverse and meaningful content for students, professionals, and the wider equine community.
The organizers hope to make this an annual tradition that not only enhances equine welfare education but also fosters connections between veterinary students, horse owners, and enthusiasts.
