The field of Food Science and Technology can be briefly described as the application of knowledge in chemistry, physics, biology, microbiology, and engineering to the industrial production of beverages, meat and dairy products, bakery and confectionery items, sweets, and canned goods – everything that is used to prepare food at home or consumed as ready-made products.
As a student, you'll engage in various practical courses, from food chemistry, technology, hygiene, and microbiology labs to conducting experiments for your final thesis.
As an entrepreneur, you can benefit from support and partnerships in scientific and development projects as well as in solving everyday production challenges.
As a research partner, we offer collaboration in food science, technology, and applied microbiology—both in fundamental and applied research.
There are over 15,000 businesses involved in food processing in Estonia. Graduates of this field can apply their skills in the food industry, regulatory oversight, marketing, consumer protection, and other responsible positions. Alternatively, they can contribute to sustainable economy and food culture by starting and developing their own businesses.
We offer two Food Technology study programs (bachelor’s and master’s), both taught in Estonian. However, ERASMUS students can join our special English-taught program. For those interested in research, doctoral studies are also available.
Your studies will take place in modern laboratories specializing in food science, technology, and applied microbiology.
The Chair of Food Science and Technology conducts fundamental and applied research on food raw materials, finished products, and by-products.
