“One Health: Building collaborations to prevent and respond to zoonotic diseases globally”

Zoonotic diseases – infectious diseases that can spread between animals and humans – know no borders, nor do they respect sectoral boundaries. Preventing these diseases and responding effectively to outbreaks requires a collaborative approach in which the health of people, animals, and the environment is considered as one interconnected whole.

We will discuss the key challenges in preventing and responding to zoonotic diseases in today’s rapidly changing world, as well as the opportunities that stronger cooperation can offer at both national and international levels.

Prof. Woutrina Smith is Associate Dean for Global Programs and Professor of Infectious Disease Epidemiology at the University of California, Davis, where she also leads the UC Davis One Health Institute and UCGHI Center for Planetary Health. 

Her work focuses on One Health research, training, and global health security, including leading a $60 million USAID project that trained over 60,000 people across 17 countries.
