Chair of Aquaculture

The Chair of Aquaculture is the only center of excellence in its field in Estonia, providing education and supervision at the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels.

Our research activities encompass both fundamental and applied studies, with a focus on fish and crayfish genetics, aquatic animal diseases, aquaculture technologies, and the restoration of fish stocks.

Our mission is to:

  • conduct high-quality scientific research,
  • educate highly qualified specialists through research-based teaching, and
  • collaborate with industry partners to translate research outcomes into practice.

The Chair is equipped with state-of-the-art laboratories for genetic studies of fish and crayfish, as well as for molecular genetic diagnostics of pathogens. In addition, our aquaculture experimental facility, completed in 2020, is recognized as a certified center for the breeding and use of experimental animals.

Studies

Aquaculture is one of the fastest-growing food sectors globally, enabling the production of fish and other aquatic organisms under controlled conditions while reducing pressure on wild fish stocks. In the context of a growing world population, aquaculture holds significant potential in meeting the rising demand for food. Over the past few decades, aquaculture production has increased substantially and today accounts for roughly half of all fish consumed worldwide.

Sustainable blue economy is an emerging global trend, including in Estonia, creating opportunities for scientific research and innovation, particularly in the development of new technologies and methods. Knowledge in aquaculture can be acquired through several study programs at the Estonian University of Life Sciences.
