Erasmus+ brought a French student to study animal breeding biotechnology

Thomas Rigolot, a student at the Veterinarian School of Toulouse In France, completed a six-week research externship at the Institute of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Sciences. His work focused on innovative solutions in cattle genetic breeding.

Rigolot came to Estonia with the aim of gaining international research experience. His choice of placement was driven by an interest in genetic improvement in animal breeding and the opportunity to participate in the project “Precise Solution for Cattle Breeding,” supervised by junior researcher Triin Tintse.

During the externship, he took part in both laboratory and fieldwork activities. He observed embryo transfer procedures, including oocyte pick-up (OPU) and in vitro fertilisation, and participated in practical tasks related to artificial insemination and pregnancy diagnosis. He also learned about the work of the equine clinic and visited the facilities of the Estonian Animal Breeders’ Association.

“The most interesting part for me was participating in OPU procedures – it is technically demanding, but very important from a research perspective,” said Rigolot.

The externship also offered an opportunity to experience everyday life in Estonia. He was impressed by Estonians’ good command of English and the safe living environment. According to Rigolot, the experience helped him better understand the role of genomic selection and biotechnology in the future of animal breeding. He encourages students to take advantage of international externship opportunities, noting that the Erasmus+ programme supports both the development of professional skills and the creation of international networks for the future.
