Erasmus+ visit brought new experiences to the Equine Clinic

Utrecht University is one of Europe’s leading institutions in veterinary medicine education, and its equine clinic treats a large number of patients daily. The clinic operates through five specialised departments: anaesthesiology, orthopaedics and surgery, radiology, reproduction, and internal medicine. Each department includes specialists (diplomates), residents, interns, and assistants, under whose supervision students actively participate in the clinic’s daily work. The clinic is equipped with modern treatment and diagnostic facilities.

During the visit, Egne Kahro joined the equine internal medicine team, participating in diagnostic procedures and treatment planning. An important part of the experience involved case discussions with internal medicine specialists (ECEIM/ACVIM diplomates).

“It is encouraging to note that both university equine clinics follow similar treatment principles and face very similar challenges in their daily clinical and teaching work,” said Kahro.

Special attention in Utrecht was given to student involvement in the clinic’s daily activities. Students from several different study years, starting from the fourth year, were present in the clinic simultaneously. They actively participated in morning patient rounds, performed clinical examinations under supervision, and administered medications. In addition, students were involved in both scheduled and emergency patient admissions.

The visit was supported by the Erasmus+ programme. Egne Kahro expressed gratitude to the staff and students of the Utrecht University Equine Internal Medicine Department for their warm welcome and valuable experience.
