Researchers from the Estonian University of Life Sciences took part in the First Conference on Animal Biosecurity, held on 5–6 June 2025 at the Autonomous University of Barcelona. The event was organised by COST Action BETTER (Biosecurity Enhanced Through Training Evaluation and Raising Awareness) and the newly established World Animal Biosecurity Association (WABA).
Junior researcher Andres Reilent presented a poster titled “Biosecurity in Estonian dairy and beef cattle herds: results of Biocheck.UGent assessment”, highlighting the current biosecurity status in Estonia’s livestock sector. Junior researcher Lidiia Moskalenko introduced her study on pathogen transmission.
The event brought together approximately 150 participants from across Europe and North America. Key topics included practical implementation of biosecurity measures on farms and in other animal production settings. A notable presentation by FAO's Damian Tago Pacheco described a competition in Africa where hunters were rewarded for the cleanest and fastest wild game skinning.
A flash-talk competition featuring 12 short presentations concluded with victory for Mattias Delpont (Université de Toulouse), who demonstrated how his team created immersive 360° videos to teach biosecurity methods in poultry farming.
The conference concluded with a traditional Catalan dinner at Marina Bay, right on Barcelona’s beach, showcasing regional cuisine and fostering further scientific exchange.
