From 11 to 15 June 2025, representatives of the Estonian University of Life Sciences' Institute of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Sciences, Kristel Peetsalu and Toomas Tiirats, participated in the 38th General Assembly (Annual Meeting) of the European Association of Establishments for Veterinary Education (EAEVE), held in Dublin, Ireland.
EAEVE brings together more than 110 higher education institutions providing veterinary education across Europe. This year, the assembly welcomed over 80 participants. The goal of the assembly was to foster cooperation, discuss issues related to the quality and future of veterinary education, and approve changes to the organization’s internal regulations and guidelines.
On the second day of the event, the focus was on lectures and discussions during the education day, which addressed specific topics in veterinary education. Additionally, regional working meetings were held – Estonia belongs to Region VI along with other Baltic and Nordic universities.
“For us, it was important to receive clarifications and experiences that support the upcoming accreditation process. Quality standards have significantly evolved and changed over the years – what applied ten years ago no longer meets today’s expectations,” said Kristel Peetsalu. She added that veterinary education is the only field in Europe where a unified accreditation system has been established, which must be met by both small and large faculties and universities. Such high standards in veterinary education primarily benefit students and animal owners.
