From 19–23 May 2025, the Chair of Veterinary Biomedicine and Food Hygiene at the Institute of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Sciences (VLI) of the Estonian University of Life Sciences hosted the blended intensive programme (BIP) “Immunohistochemistry”. The course brought together students from various levels and curricula in human and veterinary medicine from universities in the Baltic countries,
The contact learning in the histology lab was preceded by one and a half weeks of virtual studies through the “Immunohistochemistry” e-course. The e-learning phase, led by Associate Professor Piret Hussar, included video lectures, quizzes, and forum-based group work.
During the hands-on training in the lab, participants had the opportunity to perform the entire immunohistochemistry experiment themselves – from cutting tissue sections using a microtome and cryostat to completing the immunohistochemical staining of the samples.
The programme also featured guest lectures by Professors Ingrida Balnytė and Jolita Palubinskienė from the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences, who introduced the application of immunohistochemical methods in specific research fields, such as embryological studies.
In addition to laboratory work, the programme offered a relaxing and enriching excursion to Southern Estonia. Some of the lectures were held outside the university, at the Pühajärve Spa and Conference Centre, with a highlight visit to the Suur Munamägi viewing tower.
According to Associate Professor Piret Hussar, the organiser and lead instructor of the course, “It is heartening to see such a promising new generation emerging in science. Their motivation is a strong reason for us to continue organising similar courses in the future.”
The course was supported by Lecturer Tõnu Järveots, Junior Researcher Cristin Allmang, Laboratory Assistant Mare Tamm, and experienced Erasmus+ coordinators Karoli Kõiv and Anastassia Safanova.
