International Hoof Care Course Brings Top-Level Expertise to Estonia

The training brought together 20 hoof care professionals and enthusiasts from Estonia and neighbouring countries to deepen their knowledge of hoof function, biomechanics and correct trimming techniques.

The course was organised by Estonian farrier Laura Lemming. Internationally experienced instructors Martí Sala Bayés and Felipe Corrêa led the training, assisted by Monika Ungurytė. By combining practical farriery experience with a veterinary perspective, the programme closely integrated theory and practice.

Over the two days, participants explored functional hoof anatomy and biomechanics and discussed how trimming and shoeing decisions influence a horse’s overall health and performance. Martí Sala Bayés shared his experience in functional farriery principles, while Felipe Corrêa focused on limb biomechanics, pathology and clinical decision-making, helping participants place hoof care within a broader veterinary context. Practical demonstrations and discussions enabled participants to apply the concepts immediately. Active engagement, thoughtful questions and hands-on sessions reflected the growing interest in evidence-based, welfare-oriented hoof care in Estonia.

Such training initiatives support the Equine Clinic’s mission to collect and disseminate knowledge in evidence-based equine medicine both in Estonia and across the Baltic region. By promoting continuing education and interdisciplinary collaboration among veterinarians, farriers and horse owners, the clinic helps ensure that advances in research and clinical practice are effectively translated into everyday care, supporting equine health and welfare nationwide.
