Veterinary student gains international research experience in Switzerland

22.09.2025

Arina Polunjanenkova, a 5th-year veterinary medicine student at the Estonian University of Life Sciences, successfully completed a summer externship at the AO Foundation’s Preclinical Facility in Davos, Switzerland — an internationally renowned center for orthopedic research and innovation.

This unique opportunity gave Arina valuable exposure to laboratory animal medicine and biomedical research, areas that are rarely accessible to veterinary students during their studies. She highlighted the supportive and collaborative environment created by the AO team, where highly skilled colleagues were eager to mentor and guide.

In addition to the academic benefits, the experience was personally enriching: breathtaking views of the Swiss Alps from every window, complimentary accommodation, and a stipend to support daily expenses.

Although the placement did not count toward mandatory clinical rotations, Arina found the experience exceptionally worthwhile. It broadened her professional outlook and strengthened her interest in research and international veterinary work. She strongly recommends this program to fellow students interested in laboratory animal medicine, biomedical science, or simply exploring life in the vibrant and intellectual atmosphere of Davos.

Arina’s successful application was supported by EMU faculty member Dr. Felipe Corrêa, whose guidance played a key role in helping her secure this competitive opportunity.

In addition to internships, the AO Foundation offers other educational paths for veterinary professionals, including fellowships, PhD programs, and residencies. More information is available at:
