On Saturday, April 4, Hiiumaa Open Endurance Riding Championships took place in Koidma, Hiiumaa, where veterinary supervision was carried out by Felipe Corrêa, a veterinarian from the Institute of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Sciences of the Estonian University of Life Sciences, together with four veterinary medicine students, three of whom are active members of the student organization Hyraco.
Veterinary control plays a central role in endurance competitions, as the health status of the horse determines its ability to continue the course. Assisting Corrêa were students Fanni Kokko, Line Brinkmann, Marii Telliskivi and Nora Kattel. Throughout the day, the team assessed heart rates and recovery, hydration status, and spotting early fatigue or lameness. The students actively participated in both clinical examinations and the decision-making process, gaining valuable hands-on experience.
Corrêa emphasised that such competitions are an import ant part of practical training for students, enabling them to connect theoretical knowledge with everyday veterinary work and gain experience in real competition conditions.
The eventlink opens in new page was organised by Kassari RM NGO and brought together participants from both local communities and further afield. The Hiiumaa community stood out for its supportive and cooperative attitude, contributing to the smooth running of the competition. The experience highlighted that, in addition to professional knowledge, teamwork, communication skills and mutual trust are essential in veterinary medicine.
