Professor Haldja Viinalass EAAP teenetemedaliga

Professor Haldja Viinalass of the Institute of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Sciences at the Estonian University of Life Sciences has received the 2026 Distinguished Service Award from the European Federation of Animal Science (EAAP). The award was presented to her on 7 September at the 77th EAAP Annual Meeting in Hamburg, Germany.

On Wednesday, 9 September, Michael Oliewo Aluma defended his doctoral thesis at the Estonian University of Life Sciences. Entitled “Monitoring invasive crayfish in Estonian freshwaters: distribution patterns and eDNA-based surveillance for noble crayfish (Astacus astacus L.) conservation”.

This summer, Erasmus+ students and recent veterinary medicine graduates from Poland, Lithuania and Slovakia gained new knowledge and practical experience at our Equine Clinic. Alicja, Ieva, Rugilė, Zofia and Lívia all found their way to Tartu for different reasons, but their experiences have one important thing in common: the opportunity to be actively involved in the everyday work of the clinic.

Hannelore Kiiver-Pärk, Livestock Manager at the Estonian University of Life Sciences’ Märja Experimental Farm, was recognised as the Best Breeder of 2026 for the Estonian Holstein breed at the Tõuloom 2026 livestock show held in Ülenurme on 5 September. The Estonian University of Life Sciences participated in the event, held for the 35th time this year, with animals from Märja Experimental Farm.

On 2 September, the Estonian University of Life Sciences held its first One Health Forum, bringing together nearly 30 researchers and specialists from different institutes and disciplines across the university. Planned as a monthly event, the Forum aims to strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration and create new opportunities for joint research projects and funding applications.

A total of 195 new students are beginning their studies at the Institute of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Sciences of the Estonian University of Life Sciences this academic year. In addition to bachelor's, master's and veterinary medicine students, seven new doctoral students are joining the Institute.
