The Estonian University of Life Sciences has published the first volume of the Estonian-language textbook Small Animal Anaesthesiology and Surgery, focusing on anaesthesiology. Developed over three years, the book provides veterinary students and practising veterinarians with essential knowledge in Estonian while supporting the development of Estonian veterinary terminology.
The textbook was authored by Aleksandr Semjonov, Chief Veterinarian at the Animal Clinic of the Estonian University of Life Sciences, and Vladimir Andrianov, Associate Professor Emeritus. In addition to carefully preparing the scientific content, the authors paid particular attention to Estonian terminology. They reviewed specialised concepts, identified appropriate Estonian equivalents and, where necessary, developed new terms.
One of the textbook’s most significant contributions is its availability in Estonian. Veterinary medicine is a rapidly evolving field in which much of the professional literature is published in English. The new textbook makes up-to-date knowledge more accessible in Estonian-language veterinary education and promotes the consistent use of professional terminology in both teaching and everyday veterinary practice.
The textbook provides a systematic, evidence-based overview of the principles of small animal anaesthesiology. Modern anaesthesiology involves much more than simply administering anaesthesia. It includes assessing the patient's condition, managing pain, monitoring vital signs and ensuring safe recovery. The field therefore integrates knowledge of physiology, pharmacology, internal medicine and intensive care.
The textbook's practical value is enhanced by original photographs taken at the Small Animal Clinic of the Estonian University of Life Sciences. These images help connect theoretical knowledge with clinical practice and allow students to become familiar with the techniques and procedures used in veterinary anaesthesiology.
The publication of the textbook was supported by the Estonian-language Higher Education Textbook Programme of the Ministry of Education and Research and was prepared in cooperation with the Institute of the Estonian Language. Its publication represents an important contribution to the development of Estonian-language professional literature and veterinary education.
The newly published anaesthesiology textbook is the first volume of a planned two-part educational resource. The second volume, focusing on small animal surgery, is scheduled for publication in 2027. Together, the two volumes will provide a comprehensive Estonian-language learning resource supporting both the education of future veterinarians and the continuing professional development of practising veterinary professionals.
